Agriculture is the backbone of Indian economy. About 60 percent population our country is dependent on of our agriculture. Due to green revolution the food grains production has been increased by four folds. To fulfill the demand of the ever increasing population the food grains production should be doubled by year 2050. Biotechnology will play an important role in achieving this goal. 

At present there is tremendous scope for agricultural biotechnologist in research and development centers (R&D) of public and private sectors. Biotechnology provides on opportunity to convert bio-resources into economic wealth. This has to be done in a manner that there is no adverse impact either on the environment or on human and animal health. The bottom line of our national agricultural biotechnology policy should be the economic well-being of farm families, food security of the nation, health security for the consumer, protection of the environment and the security of our national and international trade in farm commodities.

Agriculture Biotechnology programme of the department is driven. reform agricultural research through adoption of technological advances, strengthening research infrastructure and human resource development in cutting edge research. The mandate of the program is knowledge generation, technology/product development for enhanced productivity, nutritional fortification & improved quality parameters, abiotic/biotic stress tolerance, input use efficiency, climate resilience and biosafety. The program supports research h in economically important crops including rice, wheat, cotton, millets, oilseeds and pulses along with horticultural crops. The department through its concerted efforts over the years has supported R & D projects in basic and translational research, national networks, centers of excellence, international collaborations as well as public private partnership. 

The program has undergone a paradigm shift over the years according to evolving needs of the formers, consumers and export markets to provide solutions in the form of varieties/technologies/products, capacity building, infrastructure creation and knowledge generation. Research endeavors supported in Molecular breeding/Marker Assisted Selection (MAS), QTL/gene discovery and marker trait association studies have been successful in generating elite prebreeding material and improved crop varieties with better yield parameters, climate resilience and input use efficiency. I assure the students and parents that College of Agricultural Biotechnology, Achloli enables the students scientifically and technologically competent to face the future challenges.
